You’ll be walking mainly on good paths at a low altitude, with occasional more demanding ascents and descents. Walking regularly in preparation prior to the tour is recommended due to 5 to 9 miles of walking in the space of 2.5 to 4 hours per day.
Included excursions
Rabaçal – enchanted forest and waterfalls (walking: 5 miles)
1 / 5
This 5-mile walk invites you to follow one of Madeira’s old levadas as it passes through a sun-dappled laurel forest and the Rabaçal hiking area. It’s one of the island’s most popular trails with the Risco and 25 Fontes waterfalls serving as impressive natural locations to stop for a rest. After passing through a rock hewn tunnel, you’ll visit a still-in-use sugar mill at Calheta. Although the factory is only in use six weeks out of the year, you can find out more about the production process at the on-site museum. And what better way to complete the day other than with a slice of honey cake and glass of fortified Madeira wine once you’ve returned to your hotel.
The Eastern Cape – Ponta Såo Lourenço (walking: 5 miles)
1 / 5
Today’s optional excursion takes you to the eastern edge of Madeira on the rocky Ponta Såo Lourenço headland. This volcanic peninsula features numerous birds and seals as well as offering amazing views out over the Atlantic. After enjoying the bracing sea spray, you’ll walk westwards to the whaling museum at Caniçal before continuing inland to the town of Machico – where the island was first discovered by the Portuguese in 1419. It’s a relatively easy-going eight-kilometre hike however, there are a few ups and downs, especially so around the furthest extremities of the Eastern Cape.
Levada do Rei (6 miles)
1 / 5
Levada do Rei is a six-mile there-and-back walk in São Jorge. The trail follows a traditional water channel through Laurissilva forest - a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its dense, evergreen vegetation. Expect a cool, shaded route with stretches of narrow levada path, occasional waterfalls, endemic flora and plenty of wildlife. The terrain is mostly level but can be uneven and damp in places.
Assobiadores–Fanal (walking: 7.5 miles)
1 / 5
Today’s walk covers approximately seven and a half miles starting from a trailhead in the northwest of Madeira. The route passes through the Rabaçal valley and the Chão da Ribeira forest, where you will see green landscapes, sunlit clearings, and traditional terraced farmlands. The final section of the trail leads to Fanal through the Laurissilva forest, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Portugal’s largest remaining laurel forests, which is estimated to be more than 20 million years old.
One Valley – Two Levadas (walking: 2.5 miles)
1 / 5
This walk in western Madeira follows a levada route between Prazeres and Raposeira. The trail is roughly two and a half miles and of moderate difficulty. It begins in Prazeres and runs alongside a water channel through valleys, wooded sections and agricultural land, with views towards the mountains and the Atlantic. The route passes small settlements such as Fajã da Ovelha and includes viewpoints facing the coastline near Ponta do Pargo.
Location
The hotel stands on Madeira’s north coast, which is less busy and developed than the rest of the island. So, if you are looking for a peaceful, secluded location then this hotel is the perfect choice. A 260-yard walk uphill brings you to Ponta Delgada, a charming village with a small marina and traditional Madeiran architecture. Follow the road down the hillside to Ponta Delgada’s small marina with its cafe. There is a bus stop directly outside the hotel with links to Funchal, around 25 miles away. The drive to/from the airport takes approximately one hour.
Out and about
As well as exploring the island’s capital Funchal, the hotel is perfectly placed for walking along Madeira’s famous Levada Trails, a unique network of irrigation channels that crisscross the island.
Funchal
Discover the highlights of Funchal, which include the Botanical Gardens, a centuries-old cathedral and the 17th-century São Tiago Fortress, which houses the Contemporary Art Museum.
