Local Area
The Indian Ocean Island of Mauritius is around 2000kms east of southern Africa, off the east coast of Madagascar. It’s renowned for its white sand coastline and fertile mountain interior as well as those absolutely stunning sunsets.
Once the strategic location was highly important to colonial sailors, however, these days, you’re more likely to find sun bathers and Scuba divers making the most of island life.
Head to the northwest coast, and the ruins of Balaclava provide insight into the island’s history as well as a good day out around the Citron River. The nearby fishing village of Balaclava, within Turtle Bay, is another great place to visit if you’re in the area.
Elsewhere on the northwest coast you’ll find the popular beachside village of Trou aux Biches, as well as the larger and livelier town of Grand Baie. Both have a good selection of beach bars and seafood restaurants sitting alongside market stalls and artisan shops.
If you’re looking to explore more of Mauritius, renting a motor scooter or a car is an excellent option. Port-Louis, the capital, is worth a visit if you’re into street food, whereas Black River Gorges National Park is the place to head for hiking trails and wildlife spotting.
Transfers from Mauritius Airport take 1 hour and 10 minutes.
