The perfect balance of beach and culture on Palmar Beach

This relaxed resort is ideal for those seeking a real Mauritian experience. It’s on the largely undeveloped Belle Mare beach on the eastern side of the island – a beautiful spot that’s popular with locals as well as tourists, though it’s large enough to still feel peaceful.

The hotel has just 77 rooms set in bougainvillea-filled gardens. It’s one of five hotels in the small, Mauritian Veranda chain, which focuses on local experiences and the chance to experience real Mauritian culture and food.
The main draw here is the 1.5km long beach. The lagoon offers safe swimming and snorkelling, as well as a fantastic choice of other watersports. Try kitesurfing or sailing, paddle a kayak, or let someone else take the ropes with a catamaran cruise across the lagoon.

You’ll be able to choose from two restaurants, one of which is right on the beach – expect fresh-caught seafood eaten with your feet in the sand. There’s also a laid-back cocktail bar for sundowners, and evening entertainment that includes traditional Mauritian sega dancing.

Local Area

Mauritius not only offers its visitors world-class beaches and coral lagoons, but unique flora and fauna, volcanic mountain ranges and a culture that blends Indian, African and French.

If you’re looking for a relaxing beach holiday, it’ll certainly tick that box (and then some). It’s easy to fill days here chilling out on the sands, taking a dip or a snorkel, and enjoying beach bar cocktails.

If you’re interested in a little more exploration, you’ll find the capital Port-Louis around an hour’s drive away. It’s a busy port with colonial architecture, an enormous central market and a great choice of waterfront bars and restaurants.

If you’re into hiking, the forests and mountains of the island’s interior offer plenty of options. The Black River Gorge National Park is a favourite with many, and while it’s around an hour a way, it’s worth the trip. Its 50km of trails take you through dense forest and past waterfalls.

If shopping is more your thing, then the Flaq Market is around 15 minutes away. There, you’ll find colourful saris, jewellery, local produce and hot samosas – along with a real taste of local culture.

Transfers from Mauritius Airport take around 50 minutes.
