Beijing
As China’s capital, Beijing brings together the country’s past and present. Explore vast imperial sites such as the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square, alongside more traditional neighbourhoods that offer a glimpse into daily life. The city’s layered history and modern energy make it a compelling introduction to China.

Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) are generally the most comfortable times to visit, with milder temperatures suited to sightseeing. Summer can be hot and humid, while winters are colder, particularly in northern regions.
Flights from the UK to cities such as Beijing or Shanghai usually take around 10 to 11 hours direct. Indirect routes may take longer depending on the stopover.
China operates on a single time zone and is typically 7 to 8 hours ahead of the UK, depending on the time of year.
Mandarin Chinese is the official language. In major cities and on escorted tours, English is widely spoken by guides and in hotels.
The Chinese Yuan (Renminbi) is the official currency. While cards are accepted in many hotels, smaller purchases are often made using cash or mobile payments.
Tipping is not traditionally part of Chinese culture, but it is customary within the tourism industry. On guided tours, a small daily amount for local guides and drivers is generally expected – your Tour Manager will advise when on tour.

UK passport holders usually need a visa to travel to China. Requirements can change, so it’s important to check the latest advice before departure. Visit GOV UK for more advice about entry requirements to China or, alternatively, visit CIBT visas for more information.
The amount of walking on a Saga China tour can vary depending on the itinerary, but most tours include some walking during guided visits to major sights such as historic landmarks and cultural attractions. As China is a large and diverse destination, days may involve time on your feet as well as periods of travel between locations.
Your Tour Manager and local guides will be there to support you throughout, and time is usually built in to explore at a comfortable pace. Each tour is given a suitability rating from 1 (Leisurely) to 4 (Active Explorer), so it is worth checking the pace rating before booking to ensure it’s right for you.
China is widely regarded as a safe destination for travellers, particularly when visiting as part of an organised tour. As with any country, it’s recommended to follow local advice and remain aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places.
