Local Area
The island of Langkawi can be found just off the northwest of Malaysia, close to the southern Thai border. It’s part of a relatively small archipelago and has long been a destination for Malaysians seeking solace from the hot and humid capital in summer.
Head to the island’s southwest coast and you’ll discover some beautiful stretches of cool white sand. Cenang beach is especially pleasant and it’s here you’ll find a peaceful little peninsula surrounded on both sides by the warm shallows of the Malacca Straits.
Hire a bike and pedal off around the coast or rent a car and explore further inland. Langkawi is criss-crossed with paved paths and rustic roads through the jungle. Follow one or two and they’ll bring you out to secret waterfalls and deserted beaches.
If you’re looking for an alternative way to see the sights, head to the cable car and sky bridge overlooking the rainforests of the northwest. It’s a good day out and made all the more enjoyable when you have a luxury retreat to return to as the sun begins to set.
