Local Area

Dunedin is located in the southern part of New Zealand’s South Island. It’s the country’s oldest city, and is best known for its natural beauty, Scottish heritage, and vibrant arts and culture scene. Fans of historic architecture are in for a treat, with many of its buildings dating back to the 19th century. Larnach Castle, St. Paul’s Cathedral and Dunedin Railway Station are a great place to start learning about the city’s fascinating past. Nature lovers should make a beeline to Dunedin Botanic Garden and the Glenfalloch Woodland Garden, that both flourish during all four seasons. Slightly further afield you’ll find the Otago Peninsula, a long, rugged slither of land that extends east from Dunedin. It’s home to a variety of wildlife, including seals, penguins and albatross. To understand more about the latter, you can visit the Royal Albatross Centre – the world’s only mainland breeding colony of royal albatross – to watch the birds nesting and feeding their chicks. This compact, vibrant city centres around the eight-sided plaza, The Octagon. Here you can sip coffee at one of the many popular cafés – or grab a bite to eat at restaurants such as Etrusco, a family-owned Italian eatery that’s been serving up mouth-watering pizza and pasta for over 20 years. For art enthusiasts, the Dunedin Public Art Gallery should be on your list. Admission is free, and you can admire a range of New Zealand and international creations.
