Local Area
The Marlborough Sounds are a breathtakingly beautiful cluster of islands, inlets and sunken valleys at the top of New Zealand’s South Island. The region is draped in a huge variety of lush vegetation, from sub-tropical rainforest to a patchwork of flora and fauna. You won’t know where to point your camera first. Furneaux Lodge is situated at a point where Queen Charlotte Sound and Kenepuru Sound meet – since the depths are very different, you’ll notice a stark contrast in water colour. And what better perspective of the sparkling sea below than on an easy-going hike on the Queen Charlotte Track? This scenic bush walk meanders gently around the coastline to the lodge’s sister resort at Punga Cove. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for the local wildlife – it’s common to spot kingfishers, fantails and the iconic flightless weka on your travels. Take to the water on a boat trip and you’ll likely see a passing pod of dolphins, little blue penguins, and stingrays. If you’re lucky, you might even spy an orca or a whale.
