Local Area
If you’re thinking of alternatives to Australia, why not give Tasmania a go? Situated just 240kms southeast of the mainland, this Antipodean island is easily accessed from Brisbane and Sydney. And it’s just over an hour to fly to Hobart, the capital, from Melbourne.
Although the pace of life is more sedate than north of the Bass Strait, don’t be fooled into thinking that there’s not much to do. Half of Tasmania falls under national park protection with the foothills of Kunanyi (Mount Wellington), just the start of the outdoor adventures.
Tasmania’s also a real hot spot for foodies with fine dining restaurants and farmers’ markets to be found in and around Hobart. Elsewhere you’ll find shopping and open-air stalls at Salamanca Place alongside exhibitions at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery.
Alternatively, head down to the Derwent River for ferry rides to Brooke Street Pier pontoon or the beach parks at Victoria Esplanade. This is also where you’ll discover the city’s cool café culture within the warehouses on the waterfront, as well as the start of walking tours around the historic lanes and colonial-era cottages over at Battery Point.
