Optional excursions
Knossos palace and Heraklion city tour
1 / 4
Situated overlooking the Sea of Crete on the island's north coast, the port city of Heraklion has long been revered for its extensive archeological sites and collections of ancient Minoan artwork. This optional excursion allows you to unearth the treasures of Europe's original civilization as well as some of the best souvlaki this side of the Aegean. Take your time to soak up the sights and sounds of the Cretan capital in between visiting the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, the Historical Museum of Crete and the magnificent Minoan Palace of Knossos.
Elounda, Spinalonga, Agios Nikolaos
1 / 4
Enjoy the option to explore offshore as you take the short boat ride from Elounda to Spinalonga Island that sits to the northeast of Crete. This former leper colony has long been uninhabited and serves as a UNESCO World Heritage site thanks to its Venetian and Ottoman fortifications. More recently, Spinalonga rose to fame as the setting for Victoria Hislop's best-selling book, The Island, and its well worth bringing along a copy to deepen the experience. After walking the island's ancient walls, you'll return to Elounda for lunch before transferring to Agios Nikolaos for a free afternoon amongst the boutiques, bars and port side fish restaurants.
Cretan countryside, pottery and wine tasting
1 / 4
Discover the delights of the Cretan countryside as you join a local guide for a cultural tour into the island's interior. This is an ideal optional experience for anyone interested in escaping into traditional village life surrounded by sun-kissed slopes swathed in vineyards and olive groves. Wine tasting in the mountain village of Peza sets the scene before you make your way to the village of Thrapsano where pithari pots have been made in much the same way since the Minoans. The mountain views alone are well worth the exertion prior to heading back to Heraklion armed with souvenirs.
Fodele and Rethymno city tour
1 / 4
This optional tour takes you into the world of El Greco as you visit the village of Fodele and find out more about the life and works of the Greek painter and sculpture. After enjoying free time to explore within the fresco-adorned Panagia Church and amongst the surrounding citrus groves you'll journey west, along the coast, to the town of Rethymno. It's a beautiful setting for a stroll around the Venetian harbour with views from the ruined Fortezza Castle providing the perfect accompaniment to a sunny day, pre or post lunch.
