Optional excursions
Lagos and Cape St. Vincent
1 / 3
This half-day excursion allows us to experience the southwest of the Algarve as we follow the coast to Lagos and become immersed in the city’s walled Old Town and expansive Atlantic beaches. We’ll also find out more about the 16th century European slave trade and pay a visit to the golden baroque interior of St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church. From Lagos we’ll continue our journey south-westwards as we head to the preserved fishing port of Sagres. Some of the views out to sea are captivating and it’s from here that we reach the ‘End of the World’ at Europe’s most south-westerly point, Cape St. Vincent.
Eastern Algarve
1 / 3
Starting with the capital of the Algarve, Faro, today’s tour takes us around the sandy beaches and traditional fishing ports of the eastern Algarve. It’s from here that we’ll find out more about Faro’s 13th century Old Town as well as the whitewashed Moorish city of Olhão. As we continue up the coast to Tavira, we’ll be right on the edge of Ria Formosa Natural Park where the salt pans and tidal lagoons are fringed with flamingos. Tavira’s medieval castle and 4th century Roman bridge conjure up a historic back story as we cross the Gilão River and make our way to the beautiful beaches and shallow lagoons of Cacela Velha. After a paddle in some of Portugal’s warmest waters, we’ll visit the last location on this eastern Algarve excursion, Vila Real de Santo Antonio. Situated on the Portuguese side of the border with Spain, this is where our tour concludes surrounded by terraced vineyards and the banks of the Guadiana River.
Traditional Algarve
1 / 3
This excursion lets you experience the real Algarve: beautiful landscapes, remote villages, and local customs. We'll stop in Loulé to explore the historic old town and see traditional Algarvian basket weaving with palm leaves ("empreita"). Visit the market for fresh products and enjoy the peaceful countryside. We'll continue along the mountain range, visiting the villages of Querença, Salir (archaeological museum), and Barranco do Velho (distillery). Then, we'll visit Alte, the most picturesque village in the Algarve, to enjoy a meal (not included) and its charming traditions. Don't forget your camera!
