The climate is ideal, and the views are extraordinary, from red, orange and green flecked lava fields to craggy mountain peaks and huge swathes of green pine forest. Walking on footpaths, hiking trails and small back roads with your expert walking host, you encounter communities, wildlife and scenery that are off the main tourist track, giving you a real feel for this dramatic little island. Add some healthy exercise and lots of fresh air and you have a real feel-good holiday.

Grade 4: Experienced, frequent walkers with a strong level of fitness can expect a more challenging walk of 10-13 miles a day with varied terrain including potential rocky paths. At a moderate altitude from 3000 to 6000 ft, there will be longer and steeper ascents and descents during your 4 to 6 hours per day including rest stops.

Camino de Santiago - Llanos de la Pez to Montanon Negro (walking: 7.5 miles)

We’ll learn more about the volcanic and geological wonders that have shaped Gran Canaria on today’s full day walk around the extraordinary Caldera de Bandama. This circular volcanic crater (one of the largest on Gran Canaria) is 200m deep and 1km across and our walk around the rim gives us spectacular views across the crater and to the mountains and coast beyond. As well as the views, we’ll admire the caldera’s prolific flora and vegetation including tall stems of colourful tajinaste and beautiful eucalyptus trees.

This full day hike from Caldera de los Marteles to Pico de las Nieves offers a scenic route through Gran Canaria’s varied landscapes. Beginning at the volcanic crater of Caldera de los Marteles, the trail passes through pine forests and open terrain, providing peaceful surroundings and changing views. As you climb, you’ll see panoramic landscapes across the island. At Pico de las Nieves, Gran Canaria’s highest point, you may even spot Mount Teide on Tenerife on a clear day. Covering around 10 kilometers with a mix of moderate and challenging sections.
