British history of Huelva and the Rio Tinto mines
1 / 3
This excursion is a must for history buffs. Starting with the Rio Tinto mining and railway museum, you’ll be taken on a journey through time and find out more about the British miners that lived and worked here from 1892 – 1992. It’s a really immersive experience with insight into the landscapes, ancient settlements and the expansion of Huelva as it grew to accommodate the workers in one of the world’s largest mines. After enjoying the surrounding countryside from the Cerro Colorado, you’ll head back to Huelva and hear the true story of the 'The Man Who Never Was'. Visiting the headstone and watching a short documentary film adds depth to one of WWII’s most interesting and successful military deceptions.
Columbus Route
1 / 3
Two historical sites that played a role in changing the world are the stars of this half-day tour. You'll cross the border into Spain and visit the Cradle of Discovery Monastery and Muelle de las Carabelas, both in Palos de la Frontera, from where Columbus sailed to the Americas. At the monastery, you'll learn about his voyages and the Franciscan friars who helped him. And just a short stroll away, at the quay, you can see and board full-scale replicas of the three ships on his expedition – the Santa Maria, the Pinta and the Nina. You'll see up-close the cramped conditions the seafarers endured for months on the high seas.
Ayamonte & Vila Real
1 / 3
Explore two border post towns that face each other across the Guadiana River that forms the border between Spanish Andalusia and Portugal’s Algarve. Each is not lacking in charm and character, but distinctly different and of their home nation. Whitewashed Ayamonte is one of Huelva’s most important towns, home to several historic churches and a Parador located on the site of a Roman fort above the town. Vila’s Real’s cobbled streets and shady plazas are a delight to explore. Enjoy a boat trip across the river which is quite wide at this point and requires a crossing of 15 minutes or so.
Location
El Rompido is a quiet Spanish fishing town set at the mouth of the Piedras River. There’s a string of cafes and restaurants lining the waterfront, and a small town square complete with traditional whitewashed church. Back at the hotel, guests can follow well signposted walks onto the protected nature reserve, where 14km of trails reveal beautiful marshlands, pine forests and shifting sand dunes.
