Crick Castle (Christmas Eve)
1 / 1
Chirk Castle was completed in 1310 during the reign of the conquering Edward I to subdue the last princes of Wales. With over 700 years of history, and as the last castle from this period still lived in today, Chirk Castle’s many occupants have left behind lavish interiors and a beautiful and eclectic collection. The state rooms include a 17th-century Long Gallery, grand 18th-century saloon with rich tapestries, servants’ hall, and the restored East Range. The award-winning gardens cover five-and-a-half acres of manicured lawns, clipped yews and herbaceous borders – perfect for a winter stroll.
Location
The vibrant and historic market town of Whitchurch, a short taxi drive away, nestles in North Shropshire near the border of Cheshire and Wales, and is surrounded by tranquil nature reserves, chalk hills, wildlife-rich meres, peaceful canals and romantic castle ruins. Once a hub of cheese production and clock manufacturing, the town is known for its medieval timber-framed houses and Georgian architecture and has over 200 listed buildings which add to the traditional festive charm during December. Out and about
Discover St Alkmund’s Church, an example of Gothic Revival architecture that has both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services. Visit Whitchurch Waterways Country Park and Jubilee Park, which are both ideal for leisurely walks. The park is connected to the Llangollen Canal, a popular spot for narrowboat trips and canal-side strolls. The historic town of Nantwich, with its black-and-white timber-framed buildings and excellent selection of independent shops and cafes, is only a 20-minute drive away. You are also perfectly located to enjoy various walking trails including those within the North Wessex Downs and the famous Sandstone Trail which includes gentle strolls along rural towpaths and through pretty farmland.
