Cruise the lake aboard an Ullswater Seamer and enjoy views of the mountains and fells. Ullswater Steamers not only provide scenic lake cruises but ferry visitors across the lake to connect with the many famous walking routes, including the Ullswater Way. Steamers have open and covered upper deck seating areas, downstairs saloons, licensed bars, and toilets. There are also facilities located at the pier houses, including free Wi-Fi.

December is a magical time in the Lake District, with snow often dusting the mountains, plenty of winter walks around the lake to brighten your spirits, and fewer crowds so you often have this winter wonderland to yourself. Ullswater is one of the most beautiful lakes in England. A lake beloved by artists and poets, carved out by a long-extinct glacier and flanked by some of the Lake District’s most eye-catching fells. Here you can walk the famous Ullswater Way, a 20-mile circular walk often done in sections with boat or bus hops, Christmas timetables allowing, and the stunning Aira Force waterfall.
Out and about
Macdonald Leeming House is three miles from the picturesque village of Pooley Bridge, set in the Eden Valley at the northern end of Ullswater. Here you will find the start of many walking routes, traditional pubs and cafés, and you can catch the Ullswater Steamer from here too. The hotel is also eight miles from the historic market town of Penrith which is festively decked in lights in December. Stroll around the cobbled lanes, explore the independent shops, and unwind in the many boutique cafes and restaurants. Other places to explore include Glenridding at the foot of the famous Kirkstone Pass at the southern end of Ullswater Lake, Helvellyn which is England’s third highest peak, and the small village of Patterdale dwarfed by the mountains around it.
