Out and about
Roman Canterbury is one of the most historically significant cities in the UK, with a cathedral that has over 1,400 years of history having been founded in 597AD by St Augustine. The city and its cathedral have been a European pilgrimage site for over 800 years, and you will see many fascinating historic relics including its city walls, medieval streets and timbered buildings, as well as modern boutiques, cafes and restaurants. The city is also the perfect place from which to explore East Kent and beyond.
Canterbury Cathedral
There’s no denying that Canterbury’s Cathedral is one of best in Europe, and it holds its place as England’s very first cathedral. Here you will find the shrine of Thomas Beckett, murdered in 1170 by four knights during evening prayers. Explore the atmospheric crypt and see the colourful stained-glass windows which cast beautiful patterns across the marble flooring. Entrance fees apply to visit the cathedral.
Westgate Gardens
Westgate Gardens attracts visitors every summer who come to see the beautiful floral displays that adorn the banks of the River Stour. Picture-perfect views of punting along the river, against a backdrop of beautiful historic houses, manicured lawn and colourful blooms makes this one of the most photographed areas of the city. Enjoy a picnic, take a punt on the river and perhaps have a pint in a nearby pub in St Dunstan’s.
St Augustine’s Abbey ruins
A must-see for any visitor to Canterbury is the ruins of St Augustine’s Abbey, founded in AD598 by St Augustine himself. Walk around the ruins of the outer walls, church, cloisters and crypt, and visit the small museum to learn more about the history of this fascinating place once home to medieval monks. Entrance fees apply to visit the abbey.
