Stirling Castle (Christmas Eve)
1 / 1
Stirling is one of Scotland’s most historically and architecturally important stone castles, and was a favoured residence of the Stewart kings and queens. Generations of Scottish monarchs have enlarged, adapted and embellished Stirling Castle, and you can admire the refurbished Royal Palace – childhood home of Mary Queen of Scots. The palace’s lavish design drew on European Renaissance fashions to show off James V’s power. Explore the recreated palace interiors as they may have looked when the Scottish king’s grand scheme was complete.
Location
Stirling’s reputation as one of the great principal royal strongholds in the Kingdom of Scotland is legendary. It was declared a royal burgh by David I between 1124 and 1127, and the city is one of Scotland’s most historic and cultural significance places. What better place to experience a traditional Scottish Christmas than in this celebrated city with its beautifully preserved Old Town, 17th-century townhouses and impressive castle twinkling with lights.
Out and about
There is so much history to explore in Stirling, from the beautifully preserved Old Town with its treasure trove of historic buildings and cobbled streets, to mighty Stirling Castle which offers uninterrupted views of the surrounding countryside. Visit the National Wallace Monument, Stirling’s famous landmark which stands just outside Stirling above the fields where William Wallace led his troops to victory at The Battle of Stirling Bridge. Explore the nearby Bannockburn Visitor Centre on Christmas Eve, the scene of Robert the Bruce’s pivotal triumph over the English in 1314, and if you want to travel further afield, the area offers a variety of historic trails and walks including The Wallace Way and the Stirling Castle circular to scenic river walks along to Cambuskenneth Abbey.
