The gardens include terraces, a lake, a small bog garden, a wild garden, an extensive kitchen garden, a bluebell wood, a millennium wood, a rhododendron hillside, herbaceous borders, and a serpentine walk. There are many different plants, shrubs and trees to see including many moisture loving plants, ferns, acers and lilacs as well azaleas and magnolias. Modern and classical sculpture is displayed throughout the Gresgarth Hall garden.
Location
The Bailrigg Campus is a large green parkland campus covering nearly 580 acres of open fields, trees and landscaped walkways, situated around three miles from Lancaster city centre. The university was established in 1964 by royal charter as one of several new universities created in the 1960s. The campus buildings are arranged around a central walkway known as the Spine, which is connected to a central plaza, named Alexandra Square in honour of its first chancellor, Princess Alexandra. There is a regular bus service from the campus to Lincoln city centre from various points around the campus.
Out and about
The University of Lancaster is almost a town itself with a lake and parks, shops and cafes, and even a weekly market, but you are perfectly placed to explore further afield. Discover the historic city of Lancaster with its medieval castle, the seaside town of Morecambe famous for its sweeping bay, and the Forest of Bowland, the perfect place for walking amid heather moorlands, valleys and fells.
Morecambe Bay
This traditional seaside town has plenty of charm with famous views across the bay to the Lake District fells. Walk on the scenic promenade with its bronze statue of the comedian Eric Morecambe, enjoy afternoon tea on the sun terrace of the 1930s Midland Hotel, walk along the beach spotting birds, and shop for crafts and antiques at the Festival Market.
Lancaster
Lancaster is a vibrant city that has a rich medieval heritage, picturesque riverside and canal walks, large green spaces, Georgian streets packed with boutique shops and a 1,000-year-old castle. Visit St George’s Quay, once one of the busiest ports in England during the 18th century, lined with Georgian warehouses and home to Lancaster City Museum. Take a stroll around Williamson Park, and see Aston Memorial, known as the Taj Mahal of the North.
Forest of Bowland
Designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Forest of Bowland was established as a Norman Royal Hunting Forest in the 11th century and despite its name its 300 square miles of upland fells have remained largely treeless since Bronze Age. Here you will find vast expanses of open moorland, deep cloughs and fells which are perfect for tranquil walks and cycling, and spotting rare upland birds like hen harriers, curlews and peregrine falcons.
