Included excursions
Doddington Hall and Gardens (half day)
1 / 2
Explore a much-loved country house and five acres of gardens, that has been a family home for over 400 continuous years. Completed in 1600 by Robert Smythson, one of England’s foremost Elizabethan architects, Doddington Hall retains much of its original architecture and interiors, and offers a fascinating glimpse into English history. Discover the formal East and West gardens which remain true to the original Elizabethan layout with mellow walled framework, in addition to the beautiful Wild Garden and Kitchen Garden.
International Bomber Command Centre (half day)
1 / 2
Opened in 2018, this memorial tells the story of the RAF Bomber Command and all the aircrew, ground crew and support staff who lost their lives serving or supporting Bomber Command during the Second World War. Stroll through the two peace gardens, visit the Memorial Spire with views directly to Lincoln Cathedral, and learn more about the bravery of the Bomber Command in Lincoln.
Location
The University of Lincoln’s main Brayford Pool Campus features a compact layout located in the heart of the city and set on the picturesque Brayford waterfront. The campus provides striking modern buildings such as the Isaac Newton Building and open spaces close to the history and heritage of Lincoln. Queen Elizabeth II opened the university’s main campus, the first new city-centre campus built in the UK for several decades in 1996.
Out and about
Lincoln is steeped in over 2,000 years of history, and boasts charming cobbled streets, a Norman castle and magnificent Gothic cathedral. It was a Roman settlement named Lindum Colonia, and evolved into a powerful medieval hub, and today it has a vibrant atmosphere, a lively waterfront and a calendar of cultural events in venues such as the Engine Shed, The Lawn, Drill Hall and Theatre Royal.
Lincoln Cathedral
Crowned by Victorian writer John Ruskin as the most precious piece of architecture in the British Isles, Lincoln Cathedral has welcomed people for almost a thousand years and is place for worship and pilgrimage. Marvel at the stunning Bishop’s and Dean’s Eyes, two Gothic rose windows that contain fragments of medieval glass, walk around Minster Yard and spot historic graffiti include sketches of ships, human figures, musical notes and board games.
Lincoln Castle
Lincoln Castle was built by William the Conqueror in 1068, and it is the only place in the world where you can see the original 1215 Magna Carta. Walk the full 360-degree Medieval Wall Walk, explore the imposing Victorian Prison, which served as a filming location for Downton Abbey, and learn about the rare double-motte design that incorporates the stone walls of a former Roman fortress.
Lincoln Arboretum
Lincoln Arboretum is a beautifully restored Grade II-listed Victorian public park designed by Edward Milner in the 1870s. It is home to notable species of trees including the unusually large prodigious pear, common beech, cedar of London, silver birch, weeping willow and a unique wingnut tree. There are also unusual features such as iron bandstand, a vintage telephone kiosk and a larger-than-life stone lion monument from 1872.
Lincoln is a city that is a joy to visit whether it’s spending time soaking up the history of the cathedral, browsing the shops or enjoying a night out, this is why I’m so pleased we can offer great value holidays based at the excellent student village of St Mark’s in Lincoln University.
