Included excursions
Stirling Castle (half day)
1 / 2
Stirling is one of Scotland’s most historically and architecturally important stone castles, and was a favoured residence of the Stewart kings and queens. Generations of Scottish monarchs have enlarged, adapted and embellished Stirling Castle, and you can admire the refurbished Royal Palace – childhood home of Mary Queen of Scots. Explore the recreated palace interiors as they may have looked when the Scottish king’s grand scheme was complete.
Drummond Castle and Gardens (half day)
1 / 2
Located in Perthshire near Crieff, Drummond Castle Gardens is one of Europe’s and Scotland’s most important formal gardens. The gardens date back to the 17th century, and were redesigned and terraced in the 19th century. The formal gardens today were replanted in the 1950s but preserve many of the original features, including the ancient yew hedges and the remaining beech tree planted by Queen Victoria.
Location
The University of Stirling occupies a 300-acre parkland campus three miles north of the historic city of Stirling and just to the east of Bridge of Allan. It has often been described as having one of the most beautiful locations of any university in the world. The Ochil Hills rise immediately to the north, while the university shares its campus with Airthrey Castle designed by Robert Adam, and Airthrey Loch, which divides the student housing from the main academic buildings. There is a regular bus service from the campus to Stirling city centre.
Out and about
Stirling’s reputation as one of the great principal royal strongholds in the Kingdom of Scotland is legendary. It was declared a royal burgh by David I between 1124 and 1127, and is one of Scotland’s most historic and cultural significance places. There is so much history to explore in Stirling and, as the Gateway to the Highlands, plenty of historic trails and walks.
National Wallace Monument
Learn more about the story of the Scottish patriot and martyr who became the country’s National Hero. Stirling’s famous landmark stands above the fields where Sir William Wallace watched the English army before leading his troops to victory at the 1297 Battle of Stirling Bridge. To see the legendary five-foot-four-inch Wallace Sword, climb the 246-step spiral staircase for panoramic views of Scotland’s historic heartland. Entrance fees apply.
Walking trails
Stirling has many pleasant walking trails and paths through a landscape that shaped the soul of Scotland from the battle-worn ramparts of Stirling to the fields of Culloden. Join the Woodcarving Trail on the Wallace Way which has carvings designed by Iain Chalmers that teach you about Stirling’s fascinating history, or join the many nature trails and woodland walks where you can see views of Stirling Castle and the Ochil Hills.
The Stirling Smith Art Gallery and Museum
Whether you want to see to see the world’s oldest football, explore local Scottish history, or view fine art collections and local artefacts, the Stirling Smith Art Gallery and Museum is well worth a visit. Here you can see over 60,000 artworks and objects spanning 10,0000 years including prehistoric whale bones and Roman pottery, and you can explore the biodiversity garden.
