Included excursions
Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens (half day)
1 / 2
Over 200 years of history have shaped the landscape at Leonardslee, and the woodland gardens have been described as the finest in England. First planted in 1801, these Grade I-listed gardens span 240 acres, and you can explore winding paths through woodland and beside seven lakes. See a diverse array of wildlife, including a rare wallaby colony, over 100 free-roaming deer, kingfishers, wild mandarin ducks, nuthatches and treecreepers.
Brighton Royal Pavilion (half day)
1 / 2
Originally a simple farmhouse, Brighton Royal Pavilion was transformed into a spectacular oriental palace in 1818 by the work of architects Henry Holland and John Nash for George IV. Restored over the last 30 years, it is filled with superb craftsmanship, including many original furnishings and decorations on loan from HM The King. The magnificent interior, replete with Chinese and Indian influences, is a reflection of George’s personality and taste.
Location
The University of Sussex’s 250-acre Falmer campus is located just under four miles from Brighton. It is surrounded by the South Downs National Park, and received its royal charter in 1961 – the first of the plate-glass university generation. Architect Sir Basil Spence created a series of signature buildings featuring iconic moats, courtyards and vaulted concrete arches, with views of the surrounding downs. Falmer train station, which serves the university and sits directly opposite the south side of the campus, offers an easy route into Brighton.
Out and about
Ever since George IV fell in love with Brighton in the 18th century, Brighton has lured visitors with its Regency squares and crescents, iconic Royal Pavilion and famous pier. Today it is a welcoming and vibrant city with a culture of creativity blending independent boutique shops, art galleries and museums with its lovely seafront – all surrounded by some of England’s most beautiful countryside.
The Lanes
Brighton is a city made for walking, and one of the best places to explore are the narrow 17th-century Lanes, between North Laine and the seafront. Stroll through a maze of narrow alleyways full of unusual shops selling antiques, jewellery, art, books and designer clothes. There are hidden squares to discover too, with cafes, bars and restaurants spilling onto the pavement.
South Downs’ wildlife
The University’s location within the South Downs, boasts a unique ecosystem and is home to a variety of animals and plant life. The campus has its own wildflower gardens, rare orchid sites, and 82 different species of bee. If you are interested in exploring the wildlife, take a stroll around Stanmer Park to see deer grazing in the fields, or along Boundary Walk to spot robins, dragonflies, butterflies, jackdaws, blue tits, kestrels, sparrowhawks and ducks.
Brighton Toy and Model Museum
Situated in Early Victorian railway arches underneath Brighton Railway Station, this museum houses one of the finest public collections of toys and models in the world with over 10,000 exhibits. Along with rare model trains, there are collections of soft toys by Steiff, Victorian dolls and doll’s houses, and a huge collection of die-cast vehicles by Dinky, Spot-on and Corgi.
