Venture to Mebourne and Victoria

The south-eastern state of Victoria serves up the very best of Australia, and its diversity makes it a great place to eat, drink, stay and play for all.

Victoria’s coastline is world-famous and encompasses the Great Ocean Road in the south-west of the state (where you’ll find big-hitting attractions like the Twelve Apostles), and the mainland’s southern-most point in Wilson Promontory National Park three and a half hours East of Melbourne.

Much of the state is given over to sweeping national parks such as The Grampians with its stunning walking tracks and Aboriginal rock art, and the Otways with its waterfalls and koalas. Phillip Island is always a favourite, with its world-famous Penguin Parade.

Explorers can take their pick from gentle hikes, cycling trips, or paddle-boarding surrounded by nature. And foodies will appreciate the upmarket wineries that pepper the Yarra Valley and many other areas of Victoria.

At the heart of it all is Melbourne, Australia’s second-largest city and a stylish hub of cafés, parks, and art galleries.

One of the best ways to experience Victoria is via the Great Southern Touring Route, which combines Aboriginal history with spectacular ocean scenery along the Great Ocean Road stretch.

Melbourne

Melbourne has repeatedly been named as the world’s most liveable city, and it’s easy to see why. It’s got a bustling, cosmopolitan business district, a vibrant art scene, vast parklands, and eclectic inner-city neighbourhoods.

Federation Square is one of Melbourne’s entertainment hubs. Here, you can explore galleries, check out pop-up bars and exhibitions, experience First Peoples culture at the Koorie Heritage Trust,  and dine around the world in restaurants serving up the A to Z of cuisine. Fancy some sea air? Take the tram down to laid-back St Kilda, where rustic cafés make the perfect spot for waterfront people-watching.

Australia’s vast state of Victoria has many strings to its bow. Here’s our pick of the best bits…

The Great Ocean Road

The Great Ocean Road unravels along Victoria’s south-west coast. Said to be one of the world’s most scenic coastal drives, it’s a National Heritage Site, beginning in Torquay, the surf capital, and many travel its length as far as the pretty fishing village of Port Fairy. This historic route has plenty to see and do, but noteworthy stops include the famous Twelve Apostles, Hopetoun Falls, Loch Ard Gorge, and London Arch.

Culture & Gastronomy

Victoria is well-known for its stellar food and drink offering. In Melbourne, don’t miss a walking tour of the laneways – most of these narrow streets date back to Victorian times, and house some of the city’s best bars and restaurants. Yarra Valley’s wineries, meanwhile, are in close proximity to sleek boutique hotels. Then there’s Bendigo – a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, which was dubbed the richest city in the world back in the 1800s.

Nature, Wildlife & the Great Outdoors

Victoria offers countless opportunities for getting back to nature and coming face to face with its animal residents. Paddle with platypus at Lake Elizabeth, hike through the Wilsons Promontory or Grampians National Park, or take a dip in the hot springs in the Mornington Peninsula. We’d also recommend Wildlife Wonders – a not-for-profit sanctuary located at Apollo Bay.
