Local Area
Drive for just under an hour inland from the coast Cape Town and you’ll arrive in the Western Cape town of Stellenbosch. Set on the banks of the Eerste River within the foothills of the mountain bearing the same name, this is one of the oldest urban areas in South Africa.
Although renowned for its proximity to the surrounding winelands, Stellenbosch is well worth a visit in its own right. It’s a quirky little town filled with arts, crafts and clothing stores, as well as a cultural heritage museum made up of four restored Dutch-style houses.
Obviously, food and drink play a huge part in the town’s identity. You won’t have to look far for fine dining restaurants or French-style bistros with extensive wine lists. There are plenty of laid-back options too. There’s nothing that beats a stroll along the riverbanks with an Italian-style gelato after you’ve enjoyed an afternoon tea and sandwiches.
Explore outside of town and you’ll find some beautiful valley scenes as well as world famous vineyards. Hiring a bike is a great idea for feeling the wind in your hair, whereas jumping on the Vine Hopper shuttle takes you to a selection of estates on a tasting tour.
From 18-hole golf courses and hot-air ballooning to Dutch colonial heritage and some of the world’s best regarded vineyards, it is the perfect addition to your visit in the Cape.
