Holiday location
Local Area
The Indonesian island of Bali is situated in the middle of the Indian Ocean archipelago. It’s long been a tropical retreat for cultural travellers as well as those seeking sun, sea and surf. Head south of the capital, Denpasar, and you’ll find the precariously placed Uluwatu Temple as well as many of the island’s best beach bars. The Rock Bar, especially, is consistently voted top of its class not only for the facilities but also the sunset views.
Travel north and you’ll be treated to a far more rural side to the island, where volcanic slopes and terraced rice paddies sit side-by-side cocoa and coffee plantations. Elsewhere it’s Hindu shrines and symbolism that comes to the fore, with mist shrouded lakes providing scenic settings for intricately carved temples, such as Ulun Danu Bratan.
