Local Area

You’ll find Kaura Bali in the peaceful village of Manggis in the east of Bali. The retreat is up on the hill of Pegubugan village, which is approximately 90 minutes’ drive from Ngurah Rai International Airport. Its surroundings are nothing short of breath-taking. Nestled among rice terraces above a dense jungle valley dotted with waterfalls, temples and nine hectares of farmland, you’ll discover a true Balinese treasure. While blissfully secluded, you can still easily reach South Bali’s hotspots if you’re craving a bit of buzz and some sightseeing.

There are plenty of activities at Kaura Bali to help familiarise you with the local area. Join the cycling excursion from the village to the beach where you’ll ride pedal-assist e-bikes to explore the Karangasem region, learn about its inhabitants’ livelihoods, and discover one of East Bali’s most incredible beaches. Willing to get your hands dirty? Try the Manggis Farming Immersion by spending half a day alongside cheerful farmers who have supported their families for generations in the fertile valley.

Travel slightly further afield and there are tons of awe-inspiring cultural experiences to be had. Tirta Gangga, just 30 minutes away, features heavenly gardens, fountains, and pools filled with multi-coloured fish – it’s a great place to learn about Balinese culture and tradition. Relax in the natural spring water believed to have healing properties and enjoy time-honoured Balinese dance performances. Meanwhile, the Hindu temple, Pura Lempuyang Luhur, is located on a hilltop with a magnificent view of Mount Agung. It’s an important place of worship and is known for its unique Balinese architecture, including the ornate “Gates of Heaven”.
