Holiday location
Local Area
Situated just to the southeast of India in between the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean, the tear-drop shaped island of Sri Lanka has long been a big draw for travellers. Formerly known as Ceylon – before gaining independence from the British – this is where vast tea estates can be found within the protected forests of the Central Highlands. The cooler climate makes for an easy-going ambience for hikers, who come to explore wilderness reserves like Horton Plains and Knuckles Conservation Forest.
Many of the island’s ‘must see’ cultural sites can be found in and around the north central plains. The ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya and the former capital of Anuradhapura, for example, make up key points in the country’s Cultural Triangle.
Head to either coastline and it’s the beaches of Sri Lanka that tend to steal the show. Locations like Negombo, just to the north of the capital, Colombo, on the west coast, have lots to offer, including old Dutch waterways and fortifications perfect for daytrip exploring.
