Local Area
They say the further north you travel in Thailand, the broader the smiles become. This is certainly case for the ancient walled citadel of Chiang Mai. Set on the banks of the river Ping, within the shadow of Doi Suthep mountain, this northern powerhouse provides a more than welcome retreat from the heat and humidity of the south.
The majority of travellers come to Chiang Mai in search of a more relaxed and peaceful way of life to what they might have experienced in downtown Bangkok. Street markets, bohemian cafés and Thai cooking classes create a sleepier, Sunday morning vibe. Museums, botanical gardens, and Buddhist wats can all be found within walking distance, as can Thai massage suites and art galleries. However, if you’re looking for a slightly more strenuous pace – explore further afield and you’ll be treated to a criss-cross of hiking and biking trails as well as opportunities to spend time river rafting or experiencing life in a hill tribe village.
