Local Area
Koh Samui is the second largest island in the country. Its white sand and palm fringed beaches are located just off the country’s east coast, within the Gulf of Thailand.
Most travellers arrive either by domestic flight from Phuket or Bangkok, or by ferry from neighbouring island, Koh Phangan, or from Sura Thani pier on the mainland.
The island’s busier, more developed, beachfront properties can be found on the east coast. The north coast, around Maenam Beach, is much more traditional and has an authentic, laid back, tropical island vibe. There’s a weekly night market at the local village and one or two Thai temples and small Chinese shrines.
The north coast is where you’ll also find the Big Buddha statue, situated on Koh Faan. Koh Samui is easy to get around and hiring a car is a great way to see more of the mountainous, jungle-covered interior. Khunaram Temple in the south is highly recommended both for its spiritual nature and all-encompassing views.
