Holiday location
Local Area
Flanked by the Andaman Sea on both sides, the island of Phuket is where people tend to head from Bangkok when they’re looking for a break by the beach. Far from being somewhere ‘undiscovered’ by tourism, this is one of southwest Thailand’s premier holiday hotspots, with spa resorts and luxury hotels aligning a succession of white-sand beaches.
Places like Patong, Karon and Kata Noi on the west coast are filled with every kind of accommodation option and a range of beachside restaurants. This area is also relatively close to a couple of the island’s cultural points of interest, namely: Wat Chaithararam and the 45-metre-high Big Buddha statue that sits on Nakkerd Hill.
Head right to the south of Phuket and you’ll end up on the peaceful peninsula of Promthep Cape. This is one of Thailand’s most dramatic locations to watch the sun sink into the Andaman, plus it’s home to the Nai Harn resort that takes pride of place on a forested hillside just around the bay. It’s the perfect place to recharge and, despite the slightly isolated setting, you’re still just an hour and 20 minutes from the airport.
