Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah
Right on its own private beach, lapped by the Arabian Sea and facing across to man-made Marjan Island, this impressive resort has 203 unusually spacious rooms and a wealth of things to do on site – starting with a wander through the landscaped grounds. The hotel has two large swimming pools, though of course, a dip in the sea is just as appealing. The large spa features one-way windows, so you can keep on enjoying the views, with blue silk walls and a VIP couples’ suite. Eight restaurants and bars give you a great choice of drinking and dining options. For dinner, Lexington serves American specialities (including indulgent seafood dishes), with wine from its temperature-controlled cellar. You may never want to leave, but if you do you’ll find an 18-hole golf course next door, plenty of nearby shopping (from spices to handbags), and the UAE’s highest mountain Jebel Jais around an hour away.

Ras Al Khaimah is the UAE’s northernmost emirate, and something of a hidden gem. While less well-known than Dubai and others, it has much to offer its visitors. Ras Al Khaimah City is less glitzy than some Emirati cities, but it has a more authentic feel, with a working port and fascinating fish market. Of course, this being the UAE, there are also plenty of luxury malls. Rooms at the Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah are as beautifully decorated as you might expect, in recognisably Waldorf Astoria style. Even the smallest rooms are large at 56sqm (the size of a suite in many hotels), and all have a living area with seating. The marble bathrooms are big too, with separate walk-in showers. Many rooms have the option to choose between 2 queen beds, or a single king-size.
