Heron Island Resort
Hand-Picked Hotel
This relaxed sanctuary on Heron Island is your gateway to some of the best snorkelling and diving in the Great Barrier Reef
Heron Island Resort is an understated retreat on an isle of the same name – a tiny speck of a place, cocooned by bone-white sand and with a green forest interior, some 55 miles off the coast of Australia’s Queensland.
The focus here isn’t on luxury, but laid-back relaxation. Interiors are pared-back and unfussy, putting the tropical surroundings in the spotlight. You’ll find rustic cane furniture in the public areas, and everything is conveniently open plan. At the centre of the resort is a palm-fringed pool flanked by loungers, and there’s a bar and restaurant onsite.
In terms of activities, snorkelling and diving in the Great Barrier Reef is at the top of most visitors’ lists, followed closely by walking tours with resident naturalists who know all about the flora and fauna in the surrounding Pisonia rainforest. Come sundown, meanwhile, it’s all about stargazing expeditions and live music on the outdoor stage.

Local Area
One of the most-visited islands of the Great Barrier Reef, Heron Island is around a two-hour ferry ride from the coast of Queensland, and it’s well worth the journey. Not just for the isle’s striking good looks, which consist of vanilla-hued sands, emerald jungle, and the clearest, bluest waves you’ll ever set eyes on.
Most notably, Heron Island is famed for its underwater world, offering up some of the best snorkelling and diving spots in Australia (there are more than 20 dive sites close by).
Step off the white beach here and you’re in the Great Barrier Reef. Of the six types of sea turtle that call the Great Barrier Reef home, three of them can be found here – the Green Sea Turtle, Loggerhead Turtle, and the Hawksbill Turtle. Along with rays, tropical fish, sharks and – from June to September – humpback whales.
Marine life aside, there are walking and bird-watching tours in the National Park that blankets most of the island, fishing trips off the coast, plus a range of watersports like kayaking on the shorefront.
