The Caribbean island of Barbados is blessed with a bounty of beautiful beaches. The calm shallows of the Platinum Coast, in the west, call to lovers of snorkelling and kayaking, as well as sun-seekers who want to snooze on soft white sand.
Holetown, on Barbados’ west coast, is a great place to discover the history and colonial heritage of the island. This was where the British first landed and features several notable sites, as well as a commemorative monument.
Bridgetown, the capital, is another noteworthy location for history buffs, with numerous museums exhibiting everything from West Indies cricket legends to the island’s natural history. It lies around half an hour’s drive south of the Fairmont Royal Pavilion, while a transfer from the airport (included if you’re staying in the Beachfront Suite or any of the villas) will take around 45 minutes.
From flower-filled botanical gardens and subterranean stalactite caves to rum distillery tours and afternoon tea on the lawn, if you’re looking for an island in the Caribbean that’s more than just a beach break, Barbados is up there with the best of them.
