Local Area
Barbados is the most easterly of the Caribbean islands and has long been a destination for cruise ships heading to the capital, Bridgetown, on the southwest coast. This side of the island is also renowned for its beautiful beaches – such as Paynes Bay and Sandy Lane – and the stretch of white sand between Holetown and Speightstown, known as the Platinum Coast. The east coast of the island is less developed than the west and the Atlantic waves make it more dramatic in terms of natural scenery.
Head inland and you’ll find expansive estates, like the 17th century Sunbury Plantation Great House and the Flower Forest Botanical Gardens that’s been planted on the site of a former sugar plantation. The island’s association with the British is also in evidence wherever you go with games of cricket at the Kensington Oval, and the Garrison and horse track at Bridgetown, linking to the island’s colonial heritage.
As Barbados is only 34km (21 miles) top to tail and 23km (14 miles) wide, it’s easy to get around. For instance, you can drive from the lively seaside town of Oistins, in the south, to the world-famous Mount Gay rum distillery, in the north, in under an hour. This means you can enjoy a rum tasting tour in the morning followed by a fish fry up on the beach in the afternoon – what’s not to like?
