Local Area
The island of Bermuda sits in the Atlantic Ocean off the west coast of America, with direct flights from the UK or just a 90-minute hop from New York City. Thanks to the subtropical setting, temperatures are pretty comfortable all year round, though the winter months are low season here unlike islands further south, for example those in the Caribbean.
The island, itself, extends like an elongated fishing hook with the Royal Naval Dockyard on the sharp pointy western end, the place to be for shopping malls and eating out. Head to the 17th-century Fort St Catherine, via Gibb’s Hill Lighthouse and the botanical gardens, and you’ll find yourself at the other end of the island at the northernmost point.
Getting around is fairly straightforward, despite the sometimes rather narrow roads, and especially so for British travellers who are used to driving on the left. Bermuda is just over 30 kilometres in length and only three kilometres wide, so it never takes too long to get to any given point.
