Witness birds take flight and soar the skies of their natural habitat on our expertly planned birdwatching holidays.
Join an experienced host to observe a variety of birds in their natural habitat, including forest, marshland and riverbank. Enjoy the great outdoors as you seek out endemic species and rare sightings in a choice of destination, including Cyprus, Spain and Portugal.
What sparked your interest in birdwatching?
I grew up surrounded by the landscapes of the Odiel Marshes Biosphere Reserve, and from a young age I was fascinated by how alive the place felt. Birds were the most visible expression of that energy — always moving, always changing with the seasons.
What began as simple curiosity slowly became a way of understanding the natural world, and eventually a way of life. Guiding came naturally after that; sharing that sense of wonder with others is still the best part of the job.
Tell us about any interesting or rare finds with Saga guests
Doñana has a habit of surprising even those of us who know it well. With Saga groups we’ve had some memorable moments — everything from close views of Spanish Imperial Eagles to unexpected encounters with rarities like Lesser Flamingos or a late-spring influx of Collared Pratincoles.
One of the joys of guiding Saga guests is that they genuinely appreciate those moments, whether it’s a headline species or a subtle behaviour you only notice when you slow down and watch.
What's your favourite bird?
I always struggle to choose just one, but if pressed I’d say the Iberian Magpie. It’s colourful, social, full of character, and completely tied to the landscapes I call home. Seeing a flock moving through the cork oak woodland still makes me smile.
What makes a Saga birdwatching holiday different?
Saga guests bring a wonderful mix of enthusiasm, curiosity, and life experience. The pace is relaxed, the atmosphere is friendly, and there’s a real appreciation for the places we visit — not just the birds.
It allows us to enjoy the landscape, the culture, and the wildlife in a way that feels unhurried and genuinely enriching. It’s birdwatching, but with a sense of occasion.
What are the most useful things to bring for a first birdwatching holiday?
Good binoculars make a huge difference, even for beginners. A lightweight notebook is surprisingly useful — jotting down impressions helps people notice more.
I also recommend a reusable water bottle, and a scarf or buff, which is brilliant for wind, sun, or even as a makeshift cushion when you’re leaning on a hide ledge.
And patience — it’s not something you pack, but it’s the most valuable thing you can bring.
Do you have any tips for birdwatching in different countries?
Every destination has its own rhythm. In Spain and Portugal, early mornings are essential from the middle of spring, while in northern Europe the light lasts so long that evenings can be magical. In desert or steppe regions, keeping an eye on heat and mirage is key.
And wherever you go, learning just a handful of local bird calls beforehand can transform the experience.
What do you always pack?
Layers are your best friend. Even in warm countries, mornings can be cool and hides can feel chilly. Neutral colours help you blend into the environment, and a wide‑brimmed hat is invaluable under strong sun.
Comfortable walking shoes are essential — you don’t need to hike far, but you do need to feel steady on your feet.
And always bring a waterproof, even if the forecast looks perfect.
