Thanda Safari Lodge - Exterior

Hand-Picked Hotel

One of the world’s leading luxury safari lodges set in the heart of South Africa’s Zululand.

Surrounded by nature and overflowing with authentic African adventures, Thanda Safari Lodge is where you head when you’re looking to escape. It’s hard to imagine a more luxurious retreat that’s at one with nature and the ever-present spirit of the Zulu nation.

Join the day or night guided safaris to see abundant wildlife, including exclusive close encounters with Africa’s infamous Big Five or enjoy a leisurely hippo and crocodile cruise. The private game reserve setting not only increases your chances of watching wildlife, but also offers numerous opportunities to get out and explore. Nature photography tours, stargazing and cultural excursions all add to the experience of being in Africa.

Life at the lodge is equally rewarding. And, in between activities, build in time to relax and soak up this natural paradise. Read a book in the library at the main lodge, head to the spa or sit back and spot wildlife at the waterhole. Admire the sunset from the daybed on your private deck or take a dip in your private plunge pool.

Dining under the stars is always so much more romantic when you’re in Africa. Certainly so if you’re sitting at a candle-lit table within the safe confines of an open-air boma. There’s also a wine cellar and cigar bar if you’re looking to kick back after a delicious evening meal.

And as Thanda Safari Lodge has a maximum capacity of just 18 guests it’s not hard to find a perfect pocket of peace and privacy. Minimum two-night stay – highly recommended.

Local Area

Known as the garden province, KwaZulu-Natal can be found in the southeast of South Africa bordered by the sub-tropical swells of the Indian Ocean. It’s a stunning location boasting bountiful beaches, wildlife filled wetlands, and the drama of the Drakensberg and Lembombo mountains.

For many travellers, a trip here can mean only one thing – safari. Head to the north and you’ll find ideal savannah habitat supporting untold species of wildlife. Africa’s big five reside here alongside cheetahs, hyaenas, giraffes, warthogs, and abundant bird life.

Private game reserves, such as Thanda Safari, are located around 260 kms north of Durban. It’s this type of environment that allows you to experience authentic Africa. You can go on game drives and follow a knowledgeable tracker into the bush. Nature photography tours also help you experience the environment and learn about what you’re seeing, and why.

Conservation projects and cultural initiatives showcase the natural world as well as the culture of the Zulu nation. KwaZulu-Natal is still the spiritual heartland of the Zulu people. Listening to tribal stories and learning more about life in local communities is an essential element of gaining a much deeper understanding of your time spent in Africa.
