Bush Camp Safari, Chiang Mai
Independent Tours
This chain-free elephant camp sits alongside the Ping River amongst jungle-covered hillsides, two hours’ drive from Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand. It’s an ideal setting for a two-night adventure with luxury tents – which include proper beds, hot showers and western-style toilets – ensuring a good night’s rest in between activities and free time. All meals are included as part of this three-day experience as well as opportunities to feed the elephants and learn more about their natural behaviours. You’ll also meet the mahouts that take care of the animals and visit a Karen hilltribe village so you can interact with the families and help out with daily tasks. It’s the perfect chance to experience life in the wilderness without compromising too much on comfort and by supporting an animal-friendly project and hilltribe communities.

Day 1 - Chiang Mai – Elephant Hills Bush Camp
Enjoy the morning in Chiang Mai before transferring from your hotel or the airport to the Elephant Hills Bush Camp. It’s just a two-hour drive and gives you a chance to observe the scenery changing from city outskirts to forest-clad highlands. As soon as you arrive at camp you’ll be shown to your luxury safari-style tent, which comes complete with a hot shower, air-conditioning, western-style WC and proper beds with mattresses. Next, you’ll find out more about the afternoon’s activities as you sit down to a tasty Thai lunch. There’s plenty to get excited about as you get to feed and interact with the elephants and find out more about their natural behaviours and the surrounding environment. You’ll also meet the mahouts who take care of the animals and visit a Karen hilltribe village to assist with some of their daily chores including rice pounding, clothes weaving and cooking. As the afternoon eases into the evening you’ll be treated to a buffet dinner in the company of your English-speaking guide and fellow campers. It’s a sociable end to the day with a couple of sundowners overlooking the river rounding things off nicely.
