Local Area
Khao Lak can be found overlooking the Andaman Sea on Thailand’s southwest coast. It’s just an hour’s drive north of Phuket, and a couple of hours’ drive northwest from Krabi. Most travellers head here from the local airport or via a lengthy bus ride from Bangkok.
The area itself encompasses lots of small fishing villages that sit in front of the mountainous jungles of Khao Lak–Lam Ru National Park. It’s a traditional setting and relatively untouched by tourism - certainly so when compared to the seaside resorts further south.
Exploring the tropical forests and sandy shoreline will invariably lead to tiered waterfalls, hillside lookout points, and secret beaches on crystal clear coves. You’ll also find several markets, such as Bang Niang, offering street food, handicrafts, and a slice of local life.
Low-key luxury beach resorts in Khao Lak offer peaceful places to rest, relax and watch the sunset. If you’re hoping to simply kick back and go with the flow, you won’t go far wrong.
