Local Area
Head to Northern Thailand and the walled citadel of Chiang Mai can be found straddling the banks of the Ping River. Although it’s Thailand’s second largest city, behind Bangkok, it couldn’t be further away in terms of hustle and bustle.
It’s got a kind of sleepy Sunday morning feel with outdoor markets and Buddhist temples, such as Wat Lok Mo Ree, presenting traditional Lana culture as opposed to consumerism. That’s not to say Chiang Mai doesn’t have more than its fair share of shops and galleries, it does, but they’re not as ‘in your face’ as what you’ll find down south, in the capital.
This is somewhere to borrow a bike and pedal off into the surrounding paddy fields; somewhere to learn how to cook traditional North Thai dishes or present alms to monks in the early morning.
Most travellers come for the famous night bazaar in the Old town or to head off to hill tribe villages in the surrounding mountains. However, if you can find a luxury retreat overlooking the Ping’s quieter, western banks, you might well find an extra special experience all to yourself.
