Denia, Costa Blanca. Spain
Ah, the Costa Blanca. Nowhere quite does food and wine like this sun-soaked region of Spain. Of course, you’ll be treated to exquisite paella [Valencia’s the undisputed home of this Spanish delicacy] but on this gastronomic journey, we’ll taste our way through idyllic coastal landscapes, lavender scattered hillsides, fragrant orange groves and swathes of vineyards. Taste sweet and savoury cocas – a delicious pastry filled with treats. Gorge on all i pebre – rich stews laden with olive oil, wild garlic and paprika. Included excursions
Guided tour of Denia city and traditional lunch
1 / 5
Work up an appetite as we take a guided tour of pretty Denia – overlooked by the fortress and citadels of its impressive castle. Behind the coastal charm of this port city lies a wealth of history dating back to the Romans and we’ll hear tales of the past, as well as explore inside the castle itself. Afterwards, it’s time to eat cocas at a local restaurant. Traditionally made in wood-fired ovens, these savoury and sweet pastries are filled with local produce – including freshly caught seafood and homemade sausages.
Visit to Albufera Natural Park and boat trip and paella making in El Palmar
1 / 5
Not far from Valencia you’ll find the gargantuan freshwater lagoon of Albufera, surrounded by pine-forest dunes, it’s home to an impressive ecosystem - and to the fields that grow paella rice. We’ll take a boat trip out onto the water to gain a different perspective of these tranquil wetlands. Back on dry land, we’ll have some time to explore more of the park, before making our way to the village of El Palmar, the original home of paella. We’ll learn how to make the dish the authentic way, with the help of a local chef, before sitting down in a farmhouse kitchen to enjoy our spoils.
Visit to Montgó Natural Park, including wine tasting in La Marina Alta
1 / 5
Dominating the skyline, the verdant and craggy cliff faces of Montgó Natural Park are home to some Spain’s most unusual plants and animals. We’ll admire the sea views from the rugged headland of Javea Bay and visit the lighthouse there. After working up a thirst, it’s time to head to La Marina Alta – an attractive coastal town that is known for its excellent vineyards. We stop at a local wine cellar and learn more about Alicante’s unusual grape varieties and taste some of them, too.
Orange experience in Carcaixent
1 / 5
We head to the sprawling orange speckled groves of Carcaixent – which legend says is the birthplace of this humble fruit. It’s at Huerto Ribera [more stately home than fruit farm] that we’ll learn every fascinating detail about the iconic Valencia orange and even get to pick some ourselves before tasting all manner of treats. We’ll also have some time to stop at Magatzem de Ribera – or the Orange Cathedral as its fondly known.
Guided tour of Gandia, including fideua cooking and tasting
1 / 5
Gandia is the birthplace of the scandalous Borgias family, who were famed for their political and treacherous behaviour during the Italian Rennaissance. We’ll take a guided tour of this ancient city, including their former home – the Ducal Palace. Afterwards, we’ll watch as a chef prepares fideua, a local delicacy that sees pasta replace the rice in a seafood paella. It’s delicious – and we’ll get to enjoy it for our lunch.
Location
Quintessentially Spanish, the coastal town of Denia is as authentic as it gets. The 11th-century hilltop castle is a focal point, surrounded by rainbow-coloured fishing shacks overlooking the harbour. Browse the designer boutiques along the tree-lined Carrer Marques de Campo. Find a pavement café in the Old Town to while away a few hours, or stroll to the cosmopolitan marina, where you’ll find an abundance of waterside eateries.
