Included excursions
Santander market and Santoña anchovy experience
1 / 4
No sooner than you step foot inside the Mercado de la Esperanza, you’ll begin to understand just how much food means to the people of Cantabria. This sprawling undercover market provides a feast for the senses as well as the main source of quality home grown ingredients for the region’s restaurants. After we’ve picked out a few choice cuts of Iberico ham and chunks of Queso de Cabrales cheese attention will naturally turn to seafood. Cantabria is world renowned for its anchovies and after our visit to the market we’ll spend the afternoon at a canning factory in Santoña. This is where we’ll discover what goes into the salting and canning process as well as having a chance to taste the end product that’s exported to top restaurants around the world.
Tapas making experience
1 / 4
There’s nothing that says food and wine in Cantabria other than a tapas making experience. Today, we’ll join Head Chef, Rodrigo, in the hotel kitchens as we lend a hand preparing the lunchtime tapas dishes and pintxos (small snacks). Under Rodrigo’s expert guidance, we’ll learn more about the ingredients, the stories and the history of each plate as well as enjoying a glass or two of wine along the way.
Pintxos tour in San Sebastian Old Town
1 / 4
Nothing beats a guided tour of San Sebastian’s cafés and bars to ensure fascinated foodies are in seventh heaven. Gastronomy is what makes this city tick with more Michelin star restaurants per head than any other city in the world. From the coffee culture of the pedestrianised plazas to touring the traditional tapas bars lining the cobbled backstreets of the Old Town, you’ll spend the day seeking out some of San Sebastian’s best places to tuck into perfect pintxos.
Seafood Cookery Demonstration and Lobster Farm
1 / 4
The final excursion on this wonderful week in Cantabria will be a visit to a lobster nursery. Set overlooking the Bay of Biscay, this traditional hatchery has been operating for over a century and supplies some of Spain’s finest mariscos (seafood) restaurants. Once we’ve returned to the hotel, we’ll join Head Chef, Rodrigo, in the kitchens to learn some classic Spanish seafood recipes and the best white wines to accompany each dish. And, of course, there’s no better way to complete the day other than a selection of locally sourced lobster, crab and crayfish for this evening’s meal.
Location
Santoña, just under two miles away, is a traditional fishing town known for its production of anchovies. Directly to the front of the hotel is a stretch of white sand beach, famous with surfers, that runs for nearly two miles. While inland there are wildlife-rich marshes and hills crisscrossed by hiking trails. The nearest bus stop from the hotel is 240 yards away. The drive to/from the airport takes approximately one hour.
Out and about
Historic Santander, the capital city of Cantabria, is around 28 miles away. While the Basque capital of Bilbao, home to the iconic Guggenheim Museum, is around 44 miles away. Both are accessible by bus.
Santander
A jewel on Spain’s verdant ‘Green Coast’, Santander has long been a popular seaside resort thanks to its white-sand beaches. Of special note are the Palacio de la Magdalena, the royal summer palace built in the early 1900s which houses an interesting art collection, the 13th-century Cathedral de la Asuncion, the Centro Botin art museum, and the Paseo de Pereda y Calle Castellar promenade park, which is lined with Baroque-inspired houses.
Bilbao
Founded in 1300, Bilbao developed into a shipbuilding centre during the 19th century. Contrast the Renaissance, Baroque and modernist architecture of the historic centre with newer additions to the cityscape. The most striking of these is the riverside Guggenheim Museum, a wave-like structure clad in titanium plates that reflect the surrounding art district. Other highlights include the funicular which offers panoramic views on its way to the summit of Artxanda and Doña Casilda Iturrizar Park, the city’s largest green space.
