Optional excursions
Ason River
1 / 5
This 11-kilometre moderate walk takes you through the beech and oak woodlands of Collados del Ason Natural Park before winding up at the largest waterfall in Cantabria, the Ason Waterfall. Starting from the mountain village of Ason, you’ll follow the river’s descent through the limestone highlands on route to Santoña and the Cantabrian Sea. It’s a real treat for potholers and nature lovers alike with the 69 metre (229 feet) single drop waterfall providing a fabulous finale to a full day spent outdoors.
Loredo & Liendo
1 / 5
Today’s optional excursion involves taking a boat from Santoña pier to the coastal town of Laredo that sits just across the Ría de Treto estuary. From here, you’ll follow the coast along Playa La Salvé de Laredo to make the most of the fantastic views across the Bay of Santoña and Mount Buciero. Upon leaving the beach you’ll ascend the historical Puebla Viejato as it winds its way through the town on route to the Church of Santa María de la Asunción. Returning to the coast, you’ll have a chance to visit Atalaya de Laredo and find out more about the fortifications that prevented enemy attacks from the sea. The final leg of this 12-kilometre walk finds you continuing along the cliff top path to Liendo via the Puerta de Bilbao. The views across the bay towards Monte de Santoña and Mount Candina are magnificent and well worth capturing before you take the bus back to your hotel.
Monte Buciero
1 / 5
This 10km circular trail starts and ends at your hotel. You’ll begin by walking to the Fort of San Martín in Santoña. From here you’ll find steps leading to a cliffside track as well as some outstanding sea views. Following the wooden railings brings you out at the whitewashed Peña del Fraile monument before continuing through a forest and past an old abandoned mine. Upon reaching the main road, the trail becomes rockier as it negotiates the cliff edge on route to the Faro del Caballo lighthouse on Monte Buciero. It would be rude not to attempt the 736 steps leading down to the lighthouse if only for the views alone. Once you’ve clambered back up the steps, you’ll follow the trail through oak and laurel woodlands for a couple of kilometres. This brings you out at another Santoña icon, the Fisherman’s Lighthouse, before descending to the wild and windswept Playa de Berrria overlooking the Atlantic. From here it’s just a short walk back to the hotel.
Noja & Isla
1 / 5
Today’s optional excursion is an easy-going eight-kilometre walk starting from the hotel. Although it’s a straightforward route towards Argoños, the trail is anything but insignificant as you turn onto the world-famous Camino de Santiago. Following the Way of St James leads you up to the summit of Brusco Hill where you can take in the country and coastal scenery including Berria and the beaches along the Playa de Trengandin. Be sure to remember your towel as you stroll along the sand and dip your toes into the Atlantic. From here you can make your way to the seaside town of Noja famed for its Blue Flag beaches and cake making nuns who reside at the Monasterio Santa María De La Merced. After taking a stroll around the town, head to Playa del Ris from where you can walk to the town of Isla and catch a bus back to base in time for a siesta and your evening meal.
