If the Western USA was a rock star, this epic self-drive would be their ‘Greatest Hits’ album … covering all the legendary sights and sounds that made them famous; an ideal introduction for first-time visitors looking to get a little flavour of their illustrious career. Starting in Los Angeles – the ‘City of Angels’ – you’ll enjoy three nights near the beaches of Santa Monica, with two full days to explore Hollywood and Beverly Hills before heading inland to the desert resorts of Palm Springs, Phoenix and Scottsdale. There are a few chunky driving days on this trip, but your time spent behind the wheel is nicely broken up with relaxing two-night stays in many places, so you never feel like you’re living out of your suitcase. If it’s nature, wildlife and open spaces you’re after, you certainly won’t be disappointed, with visits to world-famous national parks including the Grand Canyon, Death Valley and Yosemite, as well as lesser-known gems such as Joshua Tree NP, just outside Palm Springs. The trip finishes up in San Francisco, from where you can head home or otherwise extend your stay in the city – please just ask if you’d like us to arrange hotels and sightseeing.
