This classic road trip takes you from the bright lights of Los Angeles north along the iconic Highway 1 (the ‘Pacific Coast Highway’) to Monterey, before cutting inland to the towering sentinels of Yosemite National Park and finishing up in San Francisco. There’s no finer feeling that being able to pick and choose where you stop off as you cruise this legendary route, turning those Californian dreams into reality. Heading north from LAX Airport, you’ll spend time in the classic beach resorts of Santa Monica, Santa Barbara, and Monterey as you explore the Central Coast and Big Sur, watching out for whales and sea lions on route. It’s a stunning drive with pine and cypress forests giving way to swooping mountain foothills and rolling wine estates. You’ll drop off the car on arrival into San Francisco, but you have the option to add a couple of car-free days at the end of the itinerary if you want to extend your stay. That’s the great thing about this type of road trip – it’s entirely up to you how much or how little you want to do along the way.
