Let’s go to San Francisco! This world-famous city is where you can stroll up and down some of California’s steepest streets or search for clam chowder and sea lions on the waterfront. It’s one of the most liveable locations on the west coast and well known for its liberal attitude to politics, love and living life to the full.

Getting around on foot is always an option but taking a hop on/hop off sightseeing bus is infinitely better for getting orientated if you don’t have much time. Cable car rides are also pretty much unmissable, especially the Powell/Hyde route. The Powell/Hyde car is especially exciting. This is the one that takes you to the top of Lombard Street which negotiates eight hair pin bends as part of the super steep section on Russian Hill. No mean feat!

If you’re staying downtown, Union Square is the place to be. Packed full of upmarket boutiques and department stores, this is San Fran’s vibrant epicentre and perfect for people watching from the historic public plaza.

Chinatown, just north of Union Square, is another legendary downtown district. It’s one of the oldest cultural enclaves in the US and perfect for seeking out dim sum bars and karaoke lounges hidden in neon-lit narrow alleyways.

Head to the waterfront and you’ll find plenty going on at Fisherman’s Wharf. This is where you can see the Californian sea lions lolling around Pier 39 and catch boats out to the notorious Alcatraz Island. The views across Golden Gate Bridge are fantastic.

From the memorials and museums in Golden Gate Park to the peace and quiet of the Palace of Fine Arts, there’s no better place to find yourself other than San Francisco.
