Local Area
Monterey is situated a couple of hours’ drive south of San Francisco on California’s central west coast. It’s a cool place to visit on a Route 1 road trip with the lone cypress tree, sea lions and rugged granite headlands of 17-Mile Drive making for an excellent entrance.
Cannery Row and the Old Fisherman’s Wharf have long been big draws for folk heading this way. The Monterey Bay Aquarium is also well worth a visit, and an excellent source of information related to California’s natural history and underwater marine ecology.
Ask around and you’ll find wine tasting and whale watching tours as well as a wide range of hiking and cycling trails within the perimeters of Point Lobos State Natural Reserve. Alternatively, take a drive along the coast and stop off for sandy strolls and seafood.
