Hawaiian culture and a real ‘sense of place’ on the dramatic Kona Coast

With its dramatic perch on the edge of a lava rock cliff, the Outrigger Kona Resort & Spa encapsulates the awe-inspiring beauty of the volcanic landscapes of the Big Island. A past playground of Hawaiian royalty, the Kona Coast offers plenty of opportunities to explore the history, culture and natural beauty of the island, but it’s not a place to come if you’re looking for endless tropical beaches. Thankfully, the Outrigger Kona Resort has a solution – a multi-level lagoon-style pool complete with twisting 200-foot water chute and sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean.

What makes the hotel truly special is its signature cultural experiences, including activities such as hula or ukulele lessons, lei making, traditional live music and a popular guided tour to see the birthplace of King Kamehameha III. An artisan farmers’ market regularly sets up stall on the resort’s lawn, and you can sign up for snorkelling with giant manta rays (or see them feeding from Pa’akai Point). You also won’t want to miss ‘Feast & Fire’, the hotel’s authentic luau dinner show, complete with heart-pumping drums, fire performers, Polynesian dancing and delicious food served under the oceanfront hala trees.

Local Area

Outrigger Kona Resort is set on the dramatic Kona Coast, on the eastern side of the Big Island around 15 miles south of Kona Airport and eight miles from the likeable small town of Kailua-Kona. As with most of the Big Island, the landscape is rugged and volcanic, and the hotel occupies a lofty position on lava rock cliffs above the Pacific Ocean. Guests can access a small, sandy beach at nearly Keauhou Bay, which offers picnic tables, a volleyball court, kayak rentals, snorkelling and fishing cruises.

To really make the most of the island, however, a rental car is essential and the island is bigger than you might think (the clue’s in the name!) so do give yourself a couple of extra days to explore. Discover coffee plantations and cattle ranching country before driving along the verdant north shore towards the island’s small capital, Hilo. From here you can drive back to the Kona Coast via the lunar landscapes of the ‘Saddle Road’, a stunning route between the twin volcanic peaks of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. Another great day out would be to the surreal and spectacular landscapes of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, around two hours’ drive each way from the hotel.
