Turyaa Kalutara

Thanks to Sri Lanka’s Indian Ocean setting, it’s long been an attractive proposition for travellers searching for sun, sea, and tea plantations. This is somewhere to go hiking in the cooler Central Highlands or enjoy beach time from the comfort of your coastal hotel.
Most fly into Bandaranaike International Airport in the coastal capital of Colombo. From here, you’re roughly a four-hour drive inland to the cultural epicentre of Kandy. This is where the island’s most famous landmark – The Sacred Temple of the Tooth – can be found as well as the nearby Knuckles Forest Reserve.
Head a little further north and you’ll discover another of the island’s most prominent highlights, the Sigiriya rock fortress, which extends from the earth like a giant’s clenched fist. This is just one of the sites of Sri Lanka’s famous Cultural Triangle and well worth the drive if you’re staying somewhere like the seaside town of Kalutara on the southwest coast.
If you are visiting Kalutara you’ll find yourself neatly nestled between Colombo to the north and the historic port town of Galle to the south. It’s an ideal setting for daytrippers, with sacred fig trees and Buddhist stupas offering just a couple of alternatives to days spent by the beach or hotel pool.
