Key travel information

With 5,000 years of history to explore (with an abundance of myths and legends woven in), you’ll never be short of a story in Greece. Sun-kissed beaches and waterside tavernas beckon, while country paths lined with age-old olive groves and wildflowers invite you to ramble.

Tuck into a meal of salty feta and sun-ripened tomatoes on Symi, wander the cobbled streets of one of Corfu's dreamy seaside villages or marvel at the epic grandeur of the Parthenon. Philoxenia (‘friend to the stranger’) is a way of life in Greece, so wherever you roam, you’ll enjoy a warm welcome from locals ready to discuss life, the universe and everything in between at the drop of a hat.

History & archaeology

Incredible reminders of the past are around seemingly every corner in Greece. On Crete, you’ll find the vast Minoan Palace at Knossos, while Rhodes boasts a UNESCO-listed old town filled with beautiful structures built by the Knights Hospitaller. On the mainland, you can tour the ancient Acropolis, high on a hillside above Athens; spend a day exploring Delphi’s temples and theatres; or explore the site of the original Olympic Games.

Food & wine

Expect to eat well in Greece – menus here offer a delicious array of dishes made with fresh, local ingredients. Think juicy Greek salads, garlicky olives, thick yoghurt with honey, and the freshest seafood, cooked simply with olive oil and a squeeze of lemon. Traditional stews are worth looking out for, too, packed with veg and often seasoned with home-grown herbs.

Island hopping

Can’t decide which Greek Island you want to visit? Why not tick off two or three in one journey – island-hopping is quick and easy thanks to an impressive network of ferries and catamarans. The Dodecanese islands, on Greece’s south-eastern side, are ideal for a multi-island trip. Fly in and out of Rhodes, visiting lesser-known spots like Symi and Lesbos in between.

When’s the best time to visit Greece?

Much of Greece (and its islands) enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and relatively mild winters. The sea breezes in coastal areas are a welcome respite in the summer heat. In the mountainous areas of mainland Greece it’ll be significantly cooler. If you’re planning on lots of sightseeing, visit in the cooler spring or autumn months.

What’s the flight time to Greece?

It depends where in Greece you’re travelling to. Flight time from the UK to Corfu is around three hours, while to Rhodes or Crete it’s around four hours.

What’s the time difference in Greece?

Greece is two hours ahead of the UK.

What language is spoken in Greece?

Greek is the official language, but English is widely spoken in tourist areas.

Do I need a visa for holidays to Greece?
