Birdwatching in Huelva
All Inclusive
7 nights
London Gatwick Airport
El Rompido, Costa de la Luz, Spain
From the iconic flamingos in the marshes of Doñana National Park to the spectacular sight of thousands of migratory birds stopping over at the Odiel Marshes – Huelva is a birdwatcher's paradise. As we explore the countryside, watch out for glimpses of rare wildlife such as the Spanish imperial eagle and the black-winged kite. We’ll visit one of the largest black vulture colonies in Iberia, where we might also see owls and eagles. We’ll explore key wetland areas and marshes home to more than 200 species of birds, including the black-necked grebe and Europe's most important colony of Eurasian spoonbills. Freshwater lakes are where we’ll spot migratory birds that often stop here, such as caspian terns, purple swamphens, and ferruginous ducks. Each excursion is accompanied by an experienced Saga wildlife host, who will recap on the day's sightings each evening.

Huelva's countryside
1 / 5
Today we’ll be heading inland as we experience Andalucia’s extensive swathes of farmland where fields of wheat stretch from Huelva to Seville and Cordoba. It’s birdwatching heaven in the summer with Iberian Grey Shrike, Black-winged Kites and Azure-winged Magpie to be found alongside dust bathing flocks of rock sparrows. Also, if you’re lucky enough to spot a grey mongoose, mark this day down as one to remember.
Sierra Pelada and Sierra de Aracena
1 / 5
It will be the hillsides of the Sierra Pelada and the olive trees of Andevalo that form the backdrop to today’s birdwatching excursion. The Sierra Pelada is an undulating wooded region and home to an eclectic array of specially protected bird species, including one of Iberia’s largest black vulture colonies. After also keeping our eyes out for eagles, bustards, and buntings we’ll head to the agricultural farmlands of Andevalo. Covering a vast area of countryside, this is where we’ll find one of Andalucía’s most important environments for breeding raptors. Kites, harriers, and lesser kestrels can all be found here making the most of the fields of sunflowers, cereal and cork woods.
Marismas del Odiel and Laguna del Portil
1 / 5
Today we’ll be exploring two important wetland areas: the marshes of Odiel and the freshwater lagoon of Portil. The biodiverse Odiel marshes are of international importance and home to over 200 species of bird including black necked grebes, flamingos and Europe's most important colony of Eurasian spoonbills. The Portil Lagoon Protected Area is the perfect place to see a mix of woodland and water birds including terns, ducks, herons and snipes. Also, as the coast is close by, a great many seabirds can also be seen in and around the sand dunes.
Northern Doñana National Park
1 / 5
This UNESCO site and Biosphere reserve provides an ideal environment for ibis, spoonbills, egrets and grebes as well as the rarely seen marbled teal. As the first ever project of the World Wildlife Fund, the protected area has grown in population and now boasts more than 30, 000 breeding water birds. Also, thanks to Doñana’s location on the migratory superhighway, winters are filled with feathers as more than 400,000 birds arrive from colder climes.
Southern Doñana
1 / 5
Explore in the southern reaches of Doñana National Park and you’ll find some fantastic nature trails dotted with bird hides and wildlife watching platforms. It’s a really important wetland area and home to a host of freshwater lakes where migratory terns, swamp hens and ducks come down to mingle with resident ibis and spoonbills. From egrets and sandpipers to elusive otters and genets, this wonderfully wild lake district is where we’ll complete our week of birdwatching in Huelva.
Location
El Rompido is a quiet Spanish fishing town set at the mouth of the Piedras River. There’s a string of cafes and restaurants lining the waterfront, and a small town square complete with traditional whitewashed church. Back at the hotel, guests can follow well signposted walks onto the protected nature reserve, where 14km of trails reveal beautiful marshlands, pine forests and shifting sand dunes.
