Step off the beaten track to Huelva, the wilder, more rustic side of Andalucía. Situated on the dazzling Costa de la Luz, close to the border with Portugal, this lesser-known jewel of the Spanish coastline boasts much more than just sun and sea.
There is something for everyone to explore in this province, from authentic Spanish culture to a vibrant food scene, UNESCO-protected nature reserves and white-sand beaches. Plus, you are a stone’s throw away from orange-lined streets of Seville and the laid-back, historic city of Faro.
City life
Rich in maritime history, Huelva marked the point Christopher Columbus' 1492 voyage departed for the Americas – visit the Wharf of the Caravels, see replicas of his three ships: Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria. Wander the palm-lined central square, Plaza de las Monjas, the baroque architecture of Cathedral of La Merced or catch a play at the neoclassical Gran Teatro. Be sure to sample the local delicacy, acorn-fed Iberian ham, at a local restaurant or tapas bar.
The great outdoors
Nature lovers and keen walkers will love exploring the plethora of landscapes Huelva has to offer. Visit UNESCO-listed Doñana National Park, one of the largest wetlands in Europe, for impressive bird watching for migrating birds, flamingos and even the Spanish Imperial Eagle. Deer and wild boar also roam the plains, and you may catch a rare sighting of the endangered Iberian Lynx.
Other wonders include the space-like terrain of the Río Tinto (Red River) and hikes through the mountains of Sierra de Aracena to see carpets of wildflowers including Spanish bluebells, wild peonies and orange blossom.
Sun chasing
With 3,000 hours of sunshine each year, make the most of Huelva’s golden coastline which stretches 75 miles. The beaches of charming fishing town Isla Cristina are particularly tempting. Or pull up a chair at a sun-soaked restaurant overlooking the sea for a plate of fresh seafood – white prawns and bluefin tuna are especially popular in warmer months.
When is the best time to visit Huelva?
With a sunny climate and average annual temperature of over 18°C, Huelva is a year-round destination. Food lovers might choose October for the Feria del Jamon, a festival celebrating Iberian ham, while walkers may prefer the wildflowers blooming in Spring. Sun-seekers will love the mid-30s temperatures of summer, but even winter remains mild.
What is the flight time to Huelva?
Flight time from the UK to Faro is around 2 hours 40 minutes.
